Historical note

Developed by Marymal Dryden and Judith Allen Ingram (and with help from Paula Dressel), "Black Women: Images, Style and Substance" was awarded first place by the Women's Division Creative Programming, National University Continuing Education Association in 1987. The event explored the various images of African American women in film and history, their styles as portrayed in literature, and their substance in politics and community activism. Speakers included Atlanta councilwoman Myrtle Davis, civil rights activist Eleanor Holmes Norton, writer Alice Childress, and poet Alice Lovelace.

The "Women and the Constitution" series, a two day conference held in February 1988, commemorated the contributions of women in leadership roles in the United States. The conference was attended by 1,500 women and more than 100 speakers from the United States and 10 foreign countries, and it received an award from the Bicentennial Leadership Project of the Council for the Advancement of Citizenship. Georgia State University, Emory University and the Carter Presidential Library cosponsored the event "Women and the Constitution; a Historical Perspective."
