Scope and Content of the Subseries

From the Sub-Series:

The subseries includes records of the redistricting process, and records of four of the ten new districts that started up on January 1, 1971 (the new districts were designated by names as well as numbers). Records are most extensive for Central Midlands District (4), based in Columbia. Files of these districts include limited records from their geographic predecessors: Central Midland District files include records from District III; Lower Savannah District, from District VIII; and Trident District, from District I.

District reorganization file and Appalachia District records were filed with the records in subseries A. Central Midlands District, Lower Savannah District, and Trident District donated their records separately. Note that Trident District Nurses Association records are shelved in a separate location form the bulk of the SCNA records.

The subseries includes records of the following districts (original geographical area indicated in brackets):

  • District reorganization file, 1968-1970
  • Appalachia District Nurses Association (1) records, 1970-1972 [Greenville, Pickens, Anderson, and Oconee counties]
  • 3. Central Midlands District Nurses Association (4) records, 1927, 1937, 1949-1985 [Fairfield, Newberry, Richland, and Lexington counties. Later, the District expanded east and north to include Chester, Lancaster, Kershaw, Lee, and Sumter counties from the Catawba (3) and Wateree (6) Districts.]
  • Lower Savannah District Nurses Association (5) records, 1967, 1970-1975, 1978 [Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, and Orangeburg counties. Later, the southern counties formed the new District 12, known as Lower Savannah District #1 (subsequently renamed Lower Savannah District Nurses Association) and the northern counties remained District 5, Lower Savannah District #2 (subsequently renamed Edisto District Nurses Association).]
  • Trident District Nurses Association (9) records, 1962-1965, 1972-1978 [Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. Later, after the district expanded to include nurses from Horry, Williamsburg, and Georgetown counties, formerly Waccamaw District [8], it changed its name to Coastal District Nurses Association.]
