Scope and Content of the Papers
The Papers, 1905, 1933-1970, of Carey Haigler consist of correspondence, minutes, financial statements, diaries, periodic work reports, written speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs, and various printed items. The Papers illuminate three distinct segments of Haigler's trade union career: As an officer, 1933-1935, of the Alabama Iron & Steel Council and of Local 1131, Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers (Birmingham); as Director, 1942-1956, of the Alabama Region, Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO); and as Director, 1956-1964, of AFL-CIO Region 5 (the Carolinas) and Assistant Director, 1964-1967, of AFL-CIO Region 8 (Carolinas & Tennessee). Principal subjects include organizing in the industrial city of Gadsden, Alabama, the disaffiliation of the United Mine Workers from the CIO, and factional disputes in the CIO and the Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers.
