Railway Employees Department, 1954, 1962
Scope and Contents of the Records
The Records, 1901-1974 of District 4 (Southeastern), International Association of Machinists, consist of correspondence, legal documents, minutes, financial documents, grievance cases, data prepared for contract negotiations, and various printed items. The primary correspondents for District 4 are its two General Chairmen, George R. Beauchamp and Roy H. Meeks, both of whom assumed office in the mid-1950s. Other correspondents include J. J. Bridges, Chairman of the Central of Georgia Railway Lodge 8 (Atlanta) of the IAM, and Michael Fox, President of the AFL-CIO's Railway Employees Department. Most of the remainder of the correspondence is between District 4 and the various railroad systems with which it had contracts: Atlantic; Central of Georgia; Gulf, Mobile and Ohio; and the Southern. The outstanding concerns illustrated in the Records are seniority matters, layoffs, unemployment, and disagreements over craft jurisdiction lines, particularly with the Electrical Workers. The Records also reflect the participation of District 4 in the Railway Employees Department of the AFL-CIO and the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League.
