Scope and Content of the Records

From the Collection:

The Atlanta Labor Council Records, 1964-1975, are composed of correspondence, press releases, minutes, financial reports, and printed material of the Atlanta Labor Council, the AFL-CIO, and other community organizations in which the Council was active. The principal subjects of the correspondence and press releases are local political affairs, community development projects, and labor-management disputes. The correspondents include Mayor Sam Massell, Senator David Gambrell, Governor Jimmy Carter, Ivan Allen, E.T. Kehrer, J.O. Moore and other local political and labor leaders. The minutes, reports, and studies of such community organizations as the CCAA, Inc., MACHealth, MARTA, the N.W. Georgia Girl Scout Council, Community Chest/United Appeal and the American Red Cross, as well as temporary committees such as the Environmental Health Task Force and the Atlanta City Charter Commission are included. Other records illuminate the Atlanta Labor Council's role in the Fulton County Democratic Party and in local labor disputes, notably the AFSCME strike and the Holy Family Hospital organizing controversy in 1972.
