Scope and Contents of the Sub-Series

From the Sub-Series:

Eight sets of files organized according to GNA's filing system:

  • Biennial Conventions, 1930-1962, 1968-1974. Every two years, nurses from all over the United States sent delegates to the ANA convention, and this series represents the materials the Georgia nurses brought back. Proceedings, House of Delegates' reports, programs and convention-related correspondence make up this part of the collection, organized chronologically.
  • Advisory Council, 1947-1955, 1970-1973. The American Nurses' Association Advisory Council served as a meeting of representatives from all the state organizations as well as the ANA Board of Directors. At each advisory council meeting, reports on various important issues were presented and discussed before being put before the entire membership at biennial conventions. The GNA president and Executive secretary were generally the two Georgia representatives to the Advisory Council.
  • Correspondence, 1953-1958, 1968-1976. These files contain American Nurses' Association correspondence in regards to membership, dues, announcements, and general office matters.
  • Public Relations, 1945-1955, contains press releases and American Nurses' Association Public Relations Committee correspondence and minutes. The American Nurses Association took the lead in promoting nursing throughout the country, and these materials represent these efforts where they touched Georgia and the GNA.
  • Professional Counseling and Placement Service, 1942-1958. The American Nurses Association encouraged state organizations to create their own Professional Counseling and Placement Services, but the GNA never did, instead relying on the American Nurses Association to assist nurses from other states in finding employment in Georgia. Most of these holdings are correspondence from the American Nurses' Association in regards to counseling or job placement.
  • Southern Division, 1929-1957, 1975, was a sub-unit of the American Nurses' Association which served to address the unique needs of the south. By the mid to late 1950s interest and membership in the Southern Division had waned to the point where it was disbanded due to lack of state organizations that wished to be members. This collection consists of board of trustee meeting minutes, treasurer's book and reports, financial audits, proceedings, convention reports and general office correspondence.
  • Subject files, 1925-1974, 1979-1982. This series contains alphabetically organized files containing documents and materials relating to aspects of the American Nurses' Association that do not fit in the other sections of the collection. American Nurses' Association sections, committees, programs, economic and general welfare, professional registries, positions papers make up this holding. Throughout this series there are documents covering membership and particularly the American Nurses' Association's move to a computerized system of dues collection. Also included is the correspondence between the GNA and the American Journal of Nursing.
  • Chronological Files, 1929-1931, 1936, 1940-1952, 1956-1975, 1983, contain news releases, reports, board of examiners proposals, and general correspondence organized by date.
