 Sub-Series
Identifier: B

Scope and Contents of the Subseries

Subseries B consists of notes and drafts of White Political Women: Paths from Privilege to Empowerment. The subseries contains correspondence with the University of Tennessee Press, which is placed at the beginning of the subseries, followed by early drafts of "Developing a Theory of Countersocialization," a paper delivered in 1982 that later became incorporated into the book. (For further notes for this paper, see Series V, Subseries A.)

The notes on the 1982 paper are followed in this subseries by a series of drafts of the book, labelled I-IV. Draft I consists of notes and drafts dating from circa 1982-1988, including the papers which formed the basis of Chapters 2 ("Toward a Theory of Countersocialization") and 6 ("Feminism or Feminine-Ism? Forms of Political Consciousness of White Female Activists"), which was a paper delivered to the Southern Political Science Association in 1986. Working titles of the manuscript in these early stages were White Political Women Becoming or On White Political Women Being and Becoming. Draft II represents the first version (eleven chapters) sent to the University of Tennessee Press in April 1989, together with initial revisions marked in the typescript and drafted in early 1990. Draft III consists of a nine-chapter typescript completed in the summer of 1990; Draft IV shows the reduction of the manuscript to its final eight-chapter version in late 1990. A small group of incomplete fragments from various chapters follows Draft IV.
