Fifth District, 1913-1991

 Series
Identifier: VII

Scope and Contents of the Series

The fifth district series contains minutes, financial records, extensive membership records, committee files, section files, election materials, and a large amount of material pertaining to the nurses professional registry. The fifth district (metropolitan Atlanta), the largest subunit of the GNA, is in many ways a miniature reproduction of the larger association, possessing all the subunits of the larger organization as well as some internal subunits not present in the parent organization. In addition the fifth district possessed a large and long-lived professional registry, an employment agency for the city's private duty nurses, and the registry's materials are included with the rest of the fifth district materials. For clarity as well as ease of use the fifth district has been given its own series because of its size and complexity.

For most of its history, the fifth district shared office space with the GNA offices. Throughout the history of both organizations individual nurses filled leadership roles in both organizations simultaneously or started their careers in the fifth district before moving up to statewide office. The fifth district began as the Atlanta Registered Nurse Club and formed officially on February 27, 1913. They became the fifth district in 1930 when the GNA reorganized its districts to match Georgia's congressional districts. The fifth district kept extensive records that present a clear picture of the day to day running of the district as well as the impact of larger state and national issues.
