Scope and Contents of the Sub-Series

From the Sub-Series:

The executive office maintained subject files on topics of interest to the organization. Some of these files include information that is more extensively represented elsewhere (for example the Refresher Training Program, Series VIII). Other files are unique to this series (for example the Academy of Nursing file). Included in the subject files are GNA Annual Meeting programs and ephemera (but not Annual Meeting minutes, which are located in Series I), information on the Impaired Nurse program, and information on nursing during the world wars and the cold war, the GNA policy manual, and many other topics.

The subject files also include two sets of card files: the civil defense nursing information cards and the roll call of registered and unregistered nurses cards.

The civil defense nursing information cards were part of the American effort prior to entering World War II to document available health care personnel in case the nation did go to war. GNA was part of the state of Georgia's civil defense planning and was given the task of tracking available nurses in the state. The information cards were sent to all known nurses in Georgia and include the nurse's specialty, her availability for wartime service, her nursing school, and other relevant information. GNA kept these cards on file in the organization's office. The cards are organized according to district (as the districts were in 1941); within each district, nurses are divided by county and are arranged alphabetically within each county.

The roll call of registered and unregistered nurses cards are from approximately 1950. They, too, are arranged by district (as the districts were in 1950) and by county within each district. However, this set of cards is incomplete. Only the seventh through twelfth districts are included.
