Scope and Content of the Records

From the Collection:

The Records, 1917-1921, 1948-1975 of the Asheville North Carolina Central Labor Union bulks in the late 1950's, 1960's, and early 1970's. The material dated 1917-1921 consists of photocopies of a small amount of correspondence and printed material. Almost all of the Central Body's later correspondence (1957-1975) originated with Jervis as President and letters sent to him from AFL-CIO departments, International Unions, and locals under Asheville Central Labor Union's jurisdiction. The collection also includes correspondence of Jervis in his other official roles as well as some personal material. Minutes for the Asheville Central Labor Union and other labor organizations are scattered and incomplete except for those of Plumbers & Fitters Local 487, (1948-1949). Financial documents are more complete and include Asheville Central Labor Union reports, reports of other labor bodies, and a complete run of Asheville Central Labor Union's check books for the years 1953-1964. The bulk of the collection, however, consists of form letters, circulars, and printed material illustrating the role of the Central Labor Union as a clearing house of AFL-CIO information for locals under Asheville's jurisdiction.
