Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Film Periodicals collection contains popular and trade industry film publications. It includes copies of American Cinematographer, a magazine published monthly by the American Society of Cinematographers. It focuses on the art and craft of cinematography, covering domestic and foreign feature productions, television productions, short films, music videos and commercials. The collection contains copies of American Film, a movie magazine originally published by the American Film Institute (AFI) as a print publication between 1975 and 1992. The magazine emphasized analysis and deconstructionist criticism. It also consists of many copies of Cinfantastique, an American horror, fantasy, and science fiction film magazine. Additionally, it includes copies of Cinefex, which was a quarterly journal that covered visual effects in films. The collection contains copies of Film Comment magazine, which features reviews and analysis of mainstream, art-house, and avant-garde filmmaking from around the world. And it includes copies of other publications, such as People, Screen Thrills Illustrated, Nostalgia World, and more. The collection dates from 1963 to 1999 with the majority of materials dating from 1972 to 1995.
