Scope and Content of the Records
The Records, 1884-1918; 1949, of Simpson Division 210 of the Grand International Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers consist primarily of correspondence, financial documents, minutes and committee reports. In addition to day-to-day union affairs, the correspondents (1891-1918) discuss the strike against the Southern Railway System by the Order of Railroad Telegraphers, 1900; contract negotiations, 1905; the Concerted Movements for the Eight Hour Day, 1915-1918; and state and national legislation affecting railway employees. The minutes (1890-1916) illuminate the interest of the rank-and-file in work rules and contract terms, grievance procedures and decisions, committee investigations and the care of indigent members and survivors of members. The financial documents (1884-1917) include audits and monthly, quarterly and annual statements from Division 210 and the Grand Brotherhood. Reports (1900-1916) on charges against, and grievances of, Division 210 members comprise the bulk of the remainder of the collection.
