Scope and Content of the Records

From the Collection:

The Records, 1887-1970, of Carpenters Local 144 (Macon, Georgia) consist of minutes, correspondence, financial documents and printed material. The collection, which includes the original minutes of the founding of the local in 1887, bulks in the 1940s and 1950s. There is substantial correspondence with the Union's international officers, including M.A. Hutcheson, other Carpenters' locals, local and regional labor organizations and federal and state labor agencies. The correspondence and minutes discuss apprentice programs, contract negotiations, wage predeterminations and other local union activities. Of particular interest are the reports of the trial committees formed to settle intra-union disputes and the attempt by the union to increase attendance at meetings by fining members for non-attendance. The financial documents include tax records, weekly financial reports, receipts and disbursements.
