Scope and Content of the records

From the Collection:

The records, 1895-1939, 1948-1970, of the Atlanta Typographical Union, Local 48, consist of correspondence, minutes, financial documents, and printed material. They illuminate in detail the activities of the local -- membership campaigns, internal judicial and business matters, dealings with the Atlanta Typothetae and individual employers, and strikes and lockouts. Much of the strike material concerns a series of strikes from 1921 to 1932 to obtain shorter work hours. The fight for the 44-hour week from 1921 to 1926 is recorded at length. The records during the years 1930-1939 reveal how the union suffered severe effects from the Great Depression. Included among the correspondents are American Federation of Labor President William Green; International Typographical Union Presidents William Prescott, John McFarland, James Lynch, Charles Howard, and Claude Baker; Atlanta Typographical Union President W. M. Fudge and Secretary Walter Grant; and Tom Watson, former U.S. Senator and Populist candidate for President.
