Organizations and Issues, 1973-1995

Series I, Organizations and Issues, documents Schapiro's work with the Feminist Action Alliance (including director of the Survey of Women Candidates, 1975, and director of the Rape Task Force, 1975-1976), her activities for the passage of rape-related legislation, and particularly her lobbying efforts for passage of the ERA in Georgia, 1973-1981. Minutes from the meetings of ERA Georgia, Inc., 1978-1980, documentation of Schapiro's membership in the National Women's Political Caucus and the Atlanta Women's Network and material reflecting Schapiro's later activities with Women Business Owners, Inc., including meeting minutes, 1990-1995, are found here as well. Series II, Appointments, Boards, and Panels, documents Schapiro's various state and local appointments including her 1976-1977 participation in the International Women's Year (IWY). The Subject Files, Series III, covers women's political issues, rape, education, and legal issues, and the Carter administration's involvement with women's issues. Information (primarily printed material) on many Georgia women who have run for political office may be found in Series IV, Women Political Candidates, as well as some information on women in politics in other Southern states. General Correspondence, Series V, reflects media coverage of women's activities, including queries and thank you notes, as well as Georgia political activity; correspondents include local and state political candidates and elected officials including Sam Nunn. Miscellaneous Personal Materials, Series VI, includes speech notes and a clipping of a 1978 Emory Wheel interview with Schapiro. Series VII, Artifacts, includes ERA and other jewelry, "campaign" (pinback) buttons, a sash worn at the 1978 national march for the ERA, and bumper stickers.
