Scope and Content of the Papers

From the Collection:

Mr. Naylor's papers include scrapbooks relating to his life and career, and scripts for radio programs that he wrote, produced and performed in from 1934 through 1950. Most of the scripts were written during his tenure at WGST, although some of them (dating from 1934 and 1935) were written for use on KTAT and KFJZ in Fort Worth, Texas. Many of the Folders of scripts also include listener correspondence relating to the programs, and some contain background material that Mr. Naylor used when creating the shows.

The Folder inventory of the collection begins with three scrapbooks compiled by Mr. Naylor that document his career and life in Atlanta during his years at WGST, WAGA and WAGA-TV. The first scrapbook was created by Mr. Naylor specifically for the archives at Georgia State University, and documents his years at WGST (1936-1950). The Folders immediately following the first scrapbook contain copies of materials from another scrapbook (also covering the years 1936-1950), which was compiled by Mr. Naylor for his own use. Materials in the second scrapbook that duplicated materials in the first scrapbook were not copied for inclusion in the collection a second time. The third scrapbook is entitled "Memories of My WAGA/WAGA-TV years, 1950-59. Plus 'My BDA Debacle' in the Spring and Summer of '59 and My Difficult Freelance efforts that Fall, Including Being a Stock Salesman for 'The Black Sheep Club' and Manager of a Radio/TV Representative in Early 1960."

The Folders following the scrapbooks contain scripts for radio programs, along with accompanying correspondence and background material, filed in alphabetical order by name of program. The information on the Folder inventory includes the name of the program and the dates of the scripts and other materials contained within the Folder. When the program was sponsored by a particular company or product, and the sponsoring company was known to the archivist, the sponsor's name appears in parentheses after the program title and dates.

Materials relating to Wee Willie, Madame Bottlestopper, and Uncle Cyrus, three characters that Mr. Naylor created and performed himself and often included in his programs, are filed under their respective names. Researchers should bear in mind that although most of the material relating to each of these characters is filed by the character's name, additional material may be found with scripts filed elsewhere in the collection.
