Scope and Content of the Series
Series IV contains clippings, programs, periodicals, bound volumes, and other miscellaneous forms of printed material. The clippings, programs, and periodicals relate primarily to the lives and careers of Johnny and Ginger Mercer. The bound volumes include a set of The Capitol dating from 1945-1951; copies of The Fir Tree (yearbook of Woodberry Forest School), dating from 1923-1927; and a large quantity of books that were in the possession of Ginger Mercer at the time of her death. Many of the books bore autographs, annotations, or salutations, and the title pages and notations made in these books have been photocopied and filed in this series alphabetically by author.
Series IV is divided into nine subseries:
- Subseries A: News clippings, 1925-circa 1990 (arranged chronologically, and subdivided topically)
- Subseries B: Programs from shows in which Johnny Mercer or Ginger Meehan/Mercer performed (Ginger's programs are arranged chronologically after Johnny's)
- Subseries C: Programs from productions using Mercer lyrics (arranged alphabetically by show title)
- Subseries D: Programs from award programs, dinners, and other miscellaneous events (arranged alphabetically by name of event)
- Subseries E: Programs from Mercer tribute events (arranged chronologically)
- Subseries F: Periodicals (arranged alphabetically by title)
- Subseries G: Miscellaneous programs, flyers, and other items arranged alphabetically by title or type of material)
- Subseries H: Bound volumes (arranged alphabetically by title)
- Subseries I: Enclosures and annotations copied from books received with the Johnny and Ginger Mercer Papers (M95-15) (arranged alphabetically by author)
