Scope and Content of the Series

Series II contains letters, telegrams, and greeting cards from, to, and between Johnny and Ginger Mercer and their friends and relatives. Major topics include Ginger Mercer's stage career and beaux in the 1920s, when she performed under the stage name "Ginger Meehan"; the courtship of Johnny Mercer and Ginger Meehan; Johnny Mercer's career; Mercer's repayment, in 1955, of a large debt remaining from the failure of his father's business in 1927; and Mercer's final illness and death (1975-1976).

Notable correspondents include Mercer's parents, George and Lillian Mercer; other Mercer relatives, including Mercer's half brother; and colleagues and friends of Johnny and Ginger Mercer, including Bing Crosby, Cole Porter, and Henry Mancini.

The correspondence is arranged in chronological order, divided in some cases into subgroupings by author or recipient.
