Vol 20: Interviews at McGahee home and Silvey Mulkey residence, October 25, 1974
Scope and Content of the Series
Jane Ross Davis, Ross's daughter, conducted several interviews at the end of 1986 with her father. The interviews cover many aspects of his life with respect to the various series presented and give more insight and understanding into what is contained in the collection.
Note by Jane Ross Davis: "When I found, in September of 1986, that my dad's cancer, cancer of the esophagus, had metastasized and that he was not expected to live much beyond Christmas, I realized that I didn't have a lot of time to ask him all those questions I had about his life. I'd meant to get to that, but I hadn't. I knew it was going to be a hard thing to do at that point, mostly because it would force me to face up to how much I would miss him, but also because esophageal cancer makes it difficult to talk. He was being fed through a feeding tube directly to his stomach. Speaking was a tortured kind of affair for him; various obstructions and a certain breathlessness seemed to increase his discomfort. I was surprised to find, therefore, when I asked my dad if I could get his answers to some questions about his life, and record them as we went, that he was not only cooperative but enthusiastic. He seemed to want to do this. The result is this series of tapes."
