Interviewed by Chris Paton. This interview was recorded in Fort Worth, Texas. Chris Paton interviewed both Rachel Casey and her son Patrick Casey. During the interview, the Caseys talk about the years they were neighbors of the Mercers, their relationships with Johnny and Jeff Mercer, and their activities as parents and children on Lido Isle. The Caseys share many anecdotes about Mercer and his relationship with Matthew Casey, Patrick and Stephen's younger brother; the Mercers' parties at Lido Isle and at their Bel-Air home; Pat Casey's trip to Hawaii with the Mercers; hearing Mercer perform; some of the boyhood and teenage activities of the Casey children and Jeff Mercer; and Pat Casey's trips with the Mercers to the Mercers' home in Palm Springs, California. Pat Casey speaks of his continuing relationship with the Mercers after the Mercers moved back to Bel-Air, California, and he relates a few anecdotes from the period of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Rachel Casey briefly talks about her visits with Ginger Mercer after Johnny Mercer's death in 1976.

Biographical Note

Rachel Casey (b. ca. 1920), her husband Lawrence Patrick Casey, and their four sons resided in Lido Isle, California during the 1950s and 1960s. The Caseys were neighbors of the Johnny Mercer family at Lido Isle beginning in about 1954. The older two of the four Casey sons, Lawrence Patrick Casey III (known as Pat) and Stephen Casey, were friends of Jeff Mercer during their childhood and teenage years, and they remained friendly as young adults.
