Scope and Contents

Interviewed by Chris Paton. In this short interview, Mrs. Mancini speaks of her memories of Johnny Mercer. She refers to a radio program during World War II titled Swing Time, in which she performed with Johnny Mercer as a member of the "Mel-Tones." She then talks at some length about the collaboration of Mercer and her husband on "Moon River" "Days of Wine and Roses" and other songs. She also mentions briefly social occasions with Johnny and Ginger Mercer. After a discussion of the incidental music for Pink Panther and a brief exchange about photographs taken during the Academy Awards ceremonies, the interview comes to a close.

Biographical Note

Born in California, Ginny Mancini (née O'Connor) began a professional career as a singer before she was out of her teens. She sang for a number of years in Mel Tormé's "Mel-Tones." She met the noted film composer Henry Mancini (1924-1994) while she was a member of the Mello-Larks, a vocal group from Los Angeles. The two married and had three children.
