Interviewed by Harvey Newman and Andrea Young. In this interview, State Senator Johnson talks about his experience as the first African American in the Georgia State Senate in a century. He discusses his experiences with racism, segregation, and politics through stories, as well as the ideals and lessons that helped him succeed.

Biographical Note
Senator Leroy Johnson was born in 1928 in Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta. In 1963 he was elected as the first African American senator in the Georgia State Senate in a hundred years, where served until 1975. He passed away in 2019.
