Scope and Content of the Series

From the Series:

Series VI contains a variety of printed materials that were essential to Emma Kelly and her career as a pianist, singer and performer. A result of her collaboration with Johnny Mercer was the creation of the List of 6000 Songs. Johnny estimated that Emma knew at least that many songs and, determined to list all of them, helped her to organize the titles of all the songs she knew. The titles are cataloged a number of ways, by year from 1890 to 1975, by lyricist and composer, and by country and ethnicity. Other categories include, Just Great Songs, Show Songs and Solo & Semi Classical Songs. The list is handwritten and there are two copies of it in this series. There are also nine (9) Oversized folders that contain songlists, songbooks and song magazines

Significant portions of this series are the songbooks that Emma collected as well as songlists that she created. A few are generic songbooks that she must have drawn upon for inspiration, while the great majority of them are specific lists of songs that she had made into booklets for her performances. Listeners at her performances could browse through the titles, choose a song, and request that she play it. Most of the booklets contain the list that Emma and Johnny drew up together. There are other songlists that she had made up specifically for the audience, depending on the occasion ( i.e. St. Patrick's Day in Savannah), and especially for her sing-along groups. Most of these lists were handwritten (some on envelopes and one on cardboard) by either Emma or her daughters, and many are in Oversize folders. Other types of lists include mailing lists and guest books.

Printed Materials consist of printed sheet and vocal music (Note: Some vocal music has been removed and placed in the Sheet Music Collection; including 12 pieces of individual sheet music, 1 piece of incomplete sheet music and 4 pieces of sheet music in one sheet music book.). At the end of the series are programs and printed materials from a number of Emma's performances as well as the award programs at which she received honors. The Honorary Doctorate she was awarded from Georgia Southern University is included here and is housed as an artifact. Cassette tape covers, CD jewel box inserts, and photocopies of the list of songs from Emma's - Vol II cassette recording are here as well. The series concludes with printed materials related to the phenomenon created by the book, and movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Copies of a guided tour map of Savannah, booklets and programs for benefits and concerts associated with the movie, and subsequent tour information like a hotel rooming list and the official concert tour schedule are included.
