Nan Orrock oral history interview, December 30, 2006
Scope and Contents
Interviewed by Janet Paulk. Orrock’s second interview begins with her work in Nashville with the Southern Student Organizing Company (SSOC). She discussed her four year marriage with Gene Guerrero including their relationship dynamics and divorce. She worked for the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) for 17 years. While there, she was integral in race relations and unionization at the company. She describes some of the work she did there and the overall working conditions and struggles she went through. She applied and was accepted to Law School at Emory University, but ultimately turned down the offer to travel to Cuba with the Venceremos Brigade. Both events were self-described “flashpoints” in her marriage. Orrock was part of the founding cooperative of The Great Speckled Bird. She discusses the nature of the publication as well as the controversy surrounding it at the time. She also became highly involved in the Atlanta Women’s Movement.
