Scope and Contents
Interviewed by Andrew Reisinger. Stephanie Coffin discusses her family background before moving to Atlanta and becoming involved with the Bird. She discusses various aspects of working on the Bird including logistics, marketing, and accessibility. She talks about the many different social movements of the time and how the Bird covered them as well as how they may have affected the Bird and other movements. She then talks about her life after the Bird and reflects on that time period.

Biographical Note:
Stephanie Coffin was born in Seattle, Washington in 1944. She is second in birth order and she has two sisters and one brother. Her father grew up in Seattle and works as a civil engineer. He was very progressive and spoke openly about leftist ideologies. Her mother grew up in North Dakota and she worked as a secretary before marriage. After marriage, she stayed home and worked as a house maker. Her family fell apart as her father succumbed to drugs and later leaving. She moved to Atlanta in 1967 with her husband. She spent a large part of her life involved with the Great Speckled Bird and after it ceased publication, she went back to school to obtain multiple master’s degrees. She worked at Georgia State University for some time before leaving to work at Georgia Perimeter College as an ESL teacher.
