Interviewed by Andrew Reisinger. Gene Guerrero begins the interview with his family’s background and the factors that led him to become involved in the civil rights movement. He talks about attending Emory University and the social actions and demonstrations he participated in during those years. He also discusses his family’s response to his activities during the time. Guerrero later discusses the issues he had with draft registration and his involvements with the creation of the Bird. He covers an array of topics regarding the Bird including how it began, what it covered, its relationship to the Strip, and its response to certain social movements. Guerrero also talks about leaving the Bird and his experiences working with the ACLU. He later attends Georgia State University and discusses his experience there in contrast to his experience at Emory University. The interview ends with his reflection on the Bird and the issues that he still actively advocate and care for.

Biographical Note:

Gene Guerrero was born in October of 1943 in Houston, Texas. He was raised in Dallas, Texas until he moved to Atlanta during the middle of his high school years. His father is from Durango, Mexico while his mother is from southeastern Arkansas. Guerrero attended Emory University. He became involved in the civil rights movements during his time at Emory. He was involved in the creation of the Great Speckled Bird and was a member of the paper for a period until he left to join the ACLU. Guerrero also attended Georgia State University later in his adult years and took classes to learn Spanish.
