Arbitration Case documents, 1973-1974

The records, 1953-1969, of Communication Workers of America, District 3, consist primarily of more than 5500 non-precedent grievances filed by the union against its principal employer, the Southern Bell Telephone Company. Each grievance file contains correspondence, testimony, minutes of grievance committee meetings, and exhibits, which often include maps, photographs, or diagrams relating to the case. The grievance bulk in the period 1957-1968, and primarily concern pay practices, suspensions, discharges, fringe benefits, and promotions. A smaller number pertain to discrimination in promotions or discharges due to sex, race, or union membership; contract work; supervisors performing craft work; and general working conditions. The bulk of the grievances were dropped at the State (third) or District (fourth) level, but some were settled or rendered moot. A small amount of correspondence and documents related to arbitration cases conclude the collection.
