Scope and Content Note of the Subseries

From the Sub-Series:

The general file of the Research Department is an extensive body of correspondence, speeches, reports, press releases, newsclippings, minutes, notes, and technical data. It comprises three subseries: (1) Subjects; (2) case documentation from arbitration and labor relations boards; and (3) organizations. These sub-series are not formally separated. Each sub-series contains most, if not all of the types of material listed above.

The subject headings are: Taft-Hartley Act; Workers Education; the Wool Tariff; Migratory Industries/Distressed Areas; National Textile Bill; the Fair Labor Standards Act; Time-Motion studies; the Guaranteed Annual Wage; industrial Safety; Textile Statistics; and organizing campaigns in Fall River and New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Elizabethton, Tennessee.

The second sub-series consists of case material and related correspondence of the American Arbitration Association, the National Labor Relations Board, the National War Labor Board (1942-1945), and the Wage Stabilization Board (1951-1953). This material is arranged by employer name.

The third sub-series consists of labor, government, and private organizations which corresponded with the United Textile Workers. These correspondents include: The American Standards Association; the American Federation of the Physically Handicapped; the U.S. Labor Department; the Labor Department of Canada; the War Manpower Commission; the Office of Defense Mobilization; the Office of War Information; the War Production Board; the Federal Trade Commission; the American Federation of Labor; Labor's League for Political Education; the Labor Research Association; the Federation of Woolen and Worsted Workers of America; and the Synthetic Yarn Workers Federation. Material in this subseries arrived as part of accession L1973-54.
