Scope and Content Note of the Subseries

From the Sub-Series:

The President's office files contain correspondence, newsclippings, minutes, reports, financial statements, and membership rosters. It spans the two decades from 1936 to 1956, but is stronger in the years after 1944.

The correspondence, 1937-1953, concerns organizational situations in New England and the South; problems with the rebellious Federation of Woolen and Worsted Workers; the rebuilding of the UTWA after its rechartering in 1941 by the AFL; establishment of the first UTWA defense fund; an investigation of UTWA Canadian leaders accused of having Communist sympathies; and George Baldanzi's return to the UTWA from the TWUA in 1953, becoming Director of Organization.

The remainder of the series consists of: Financial records composed primarily of receipts, per capita tax payments, and defense fund ledgers; minutes of the International Executive Council, the Midwestern Council, the Department of Woven Label Workers, the Southern Textile Conference, the Narrow Fabric Workers' Conference, and the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada; reports, speeches, and newspaper articles by Francis Gorman, Anthony Valente, and Lloyd Klenert; reports submitted to the International Executive Council; correspondence, committee and officer reports, notes, drafts, and resolutions of UTWA conventions from 1936 to 1956; and some membership rosters from locals, districts, and Federations.

The series is completed by miscellaneous newsclippings, press releases, transcripts of radio broadcasts, and a variety of material concerning the Anglo-American Council on Productivity, the International Labour Office, the Labor Research Association, Labor's League for Political Education, the Senate Committee on Labor and Welfare, the Wool Labor Advisory Committee, and other organizations. Material in this subseries arrived as part of accession L1973-54.
