Scope and Content Note of the Subseries

From the Sub-Series:

The correspondence of the Research Department Directors Benjamin Haskel, 1946-1952; Frank Gorman, 1952-1956, primarily relates to technical matters. Much of it involves communications with UTWA Vice-Presidents and international representatives concerning local union compliance with Taft-Hartley Act provisions; the gathering of financial reports on textile firms; the visits of teams of foreign textile workers/unionists; the collection of wage rates and work load data from all sectors of the industry and country; the compilation and distribution of any information needed for arbitration or negotiation sessions; time-motion studies, often in conjunction with management consultants; the establishment of worker education programs; and the preparation of testimony for presentation to Congressional committees.

Because the Research Director also edited the UTWA newspaper, the Textile Challenger, a substantial portion of this series relates to the gathering of news stories and photographs from organizers; subscription and distribution matters; and communications with other labor newspapers and labor press associations.

Correspondents include Roy Groenert, Joseph Krause, Joseph Jacobs, Phillip Salem, Frank Sgambato, John Vertente, several AFL departments and committees, the American Standards Association, the American Friends Service Committee, International Labor Press Association, the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations, and the U.S. Labor Department and its subdivisions, particularly the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Material in this subseries arrived as part of accession L1973-54.
