Scope and Content Note of the Series

From the Series:

The series of local union records consists of correspondence, membership rosters, contract proposals, financial and legal documents, and industry data such as job classifications and wage rates. The material spans the years 1940 to 1969 but bulks in the decade 1946-1956.

Correspondence constitutes the largest part of this series. The correspondence of the New England and Middle Atlantic locals is with all three International officers, whereas that of the Southern locals is primarily with Southern Director Joseph Jacobs.

Subjects frequently discussed include per capita taxes, dues payments, defense fund contributions, local news for the Textile Challenger, interpretations of contract and constitution provisions, recognition and contract negotiations, activities of the Textile Workers Union of America (TWUA-CIO), the boom-and-bust nature of the textile industry, political activity by locals, factional feuding within locals requiring the attention of International officers, grievance settlements, arbitration hearings, and National Labor Relations Board cases. Material in this series arrived as part of accession L1973-54.
