Scope and Content of the Records

From the Collection:

The Records, 1945, 1965-1968, of the Florida State Federated Council, AFL-CIO, consist of correspondence, minutes, financial documents, and printed material. Correspondents for the Council are William Allen, Secretary-Treasurer; Art Hallgren, Vice-President; and Frank Roche and Charlie Harris, Presidents. The correspondence, consisting of a general subject file and files of affiliated local unions and central labor unions, illuminates such primary concerns as labor's role in education; national, state and local legislation; and civic affairs. Illustrative of these concerns are the Council's opposition to the Taft-Hartley Act and the Landrum-Griffin Bill and its support of Congressman Claude Pepper, whom it considered a friend of labor. Other topics of continuing interest are voter registration, increasing the number of local unions affiliated with the Council, and the Dedicated Dollar Fund, which financed the Council's political, legislative and educational activities.
