Scope and Contents of the Series
Interviews in this series were conducted by Lorraine Nelson as material for her book, The Belle of Ashby Street. Nelson covered the 1946 Fifth Congressional District campaign for the Atlanta Georgian newspaper, and later went to Washington, D.C. to work for U.S. Rep. Helen Douglas Mankin. The 1946 campaign is notable in Georgia history in that it was the first congressional race since the Reconstruction era where black voter participation made an appreciable difference.
