Scope and Contents of the Series
Series IV (1951-1974) of the Service Employees International Union, Southern Region records consist primarily of the files of SEIU Locals 554 (Atlanta), 544 (Knoxville), and numerous Midwestern locals. Val Cox (former Midwestern Representative and current Southern Director), Eugene Moats (Midwestern Director), Aristide Smith (President, Local 544), and Edmund Dumas (Business Manager, Local 554), are principal correspondents. Major topics discussed are organizing efforts, grievance settlements, and contract negotiations between SEIU Local 554 and the Atlanta Army Depot, Local 544 and the Tennessee Valley Authority, and Local 119 and the University of Illinois.
