Miscellaneous, 1967-1972
Scope and Contents of the Series
Series II (1964-1972) of the Service Employees International Union, Southern Region records comprise correspondence, work reports of Regional Director Val Cox, and printed items such as press releases, handbills, and leaflets. The correspondence, which bulks after 1967 when Mr. Cox assumed control of SEIU's southern operations, is primarily with the SEIU International office, the several AFL-CIO state councils in the South, and national politicians. Principal subjects are current and prospective organizing possibilities, mostly among custodial and other non-professional employees at nursing homes, public hospitals, and other government installations; the Humphrey-Muskie campaign, 1968; SEIU administrative matters; and lobbying efforts for several pieces of national legislation. Another segment of the collection consists of records of SEIU Local 579 (Atlanta), pertinent to its bargaining relationship with nine Atlanta-area companies. These records are primarily correspondence and National Labor Relations Board case materials.
