Scope and Contents of the Records
The records of International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 926 (Atlanta, Ga.) consist of the files kept by Tommy Archer as financial secretary of the local from 1949, as treasurer of the International's General Pension Fund, 1957-1966, and as President of the South Atlantic Conference of Operating Engineers, 1958-1959. Filed alphabetically and consisting in bulk of correspondence and financial records, the local's Office Files concern membership, insurance, job opportunities, disciplinary matters and relationships with contractors in Atlanta, in Georgia, and in the South. Minutes of the regular meetings and those of the executive board, 1949-1970, discuss wages, elections, trials, and various construction jobs. Archer's work as treasurer of the International's General Pension Fund and as president of the South Atlantic Conference of Operating Engineers is described through minutes, correspondence, and financial data, 1953-1966. Organized in 1953 out of concern of the international union for the number of unorganized operating engineers in the South Atlantic states, the South Atlantic Conference in these minutes discusses organizing in each state, while correspondence deals more with conference arrangements.
