Scope and Contents of the Series
The bulk of the series consists of legal documents and notes related to the “Dawson Five” (J. D. Davenport, James E. Jackson Jr., Johnny B. Jackson, Henderson Watson, and Roosevelt Watson) case in Terrell County, Georgia. Other records include correspondence, reports, and articles and clippings, relating not only to the case, but also to Dawson and Terrell County and to the work of the Team Defense Project and the Southern Poverty Law Center in organizing the Dawson 5’s defense. The bulk of the material dates 1976-1979, but clippings and other collected material document race relations in Dawson, 1960-1975.
