Scope and Contents of the Series
In 1951, Winpisinger, at age 26, became one of the youngest members of the IAM national field staff. Winpisinger would later serve as IAM president from 1977 until 1989. During his tenure as IAM president and as a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council, Winpisinger gained a reputation as an outspoken advocate of progressive ideals. He died in December 1997.
The President William W. Winpisinger reading files contain newspaper clippings, printed materials, and correspondence. There are materials related to the 1981-1982 Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) strike, the energy crisis and George Meany's resignation as President of the AFL-CIO.
