Scope and Contents of the Subseries

From the Sub-Series:

The first issue of the journal was published in 1891. The primary purpose of the journal was to establish regular communication between the national office of the union and the rank and file members, with monthly, bimonthly then later quarterly issues. Pattern Makers' Journal sought to inform the membership about political issues, economic developments, and union business. The Journal also enabled local labor organizations to report on the union's activities throughout the country. The Journal also kept the members informed of changing technologies industry, plus it did provide the membership a modicum of entertainment through its publication of a minor amount of poetry, illustrations, and fictional, but union-related stories.

The national officers typically used the editorial section of the Journal to highlight the issues they felt should be brought to the attention of the union membership. The editorials were extremely wide- ranging, including explanations of technical matters such as union bylaws and administration, as well as interpretations of major events, including strikes and negotiations, legislation, or economic circumstances affecting the union. The officers also touched on wider philosophical matters such as the theory of trade unionism, the relationship of labor to capital, and the responsibility of the government to its working citizens. The editorials, to be sure, tended to reflect the viewpoint of the national officers or at least the controlling faction within the union. The Journal ceased publication in 1991, when the League merged into the IAMAW.
