Scope and Content of the Collection

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Artifact collection comprises a wide variety of artifacts, including charters, photographs, paintings, posters, banners, certificates, and tool kits, 1888-circa 2000. The items were created or received by IAMAW's officers, headquarters, and local lodges. The collection includes the contents of the "Time Capsule of 1955" placed in the cornerstone of the union's then headquarters.

IAMAW Local Lodge 37 was chartered on July 11, 1899, and dissolved in the late 1980s. Abstract

The International Association of Machinists (IAM) collection of Office Employees International Union, Local 153 and International Ladies Garment Workers Union (General office) arbitration records, 1952-1955, undated, contains the minutes of the hearing held on January 25-26, 1955, briefs and exhibits submitted by the two parties, and some correspondence. The final ruling is not included. IAM Vice President Elmer E. Walker served as arbitrator of the dispute.

The White House Conference on Education occurred November 28-December 1, 1955. About 1,800 representatives attended to discuss the U.S. educational system and its needs. The International Association of Machinists (IAM) collection of White House Conference on Education record contain a packet of printed material, schedules, and correspondence provided to representatives who attended the meetings. IAM President Albert Hayes was a member of the Conference Committee.
