Scope and Contents of the Records

The records, 1937-1983, of Carpenters Local 144 (Macon, Ga.) consists of correspondence, financial records, printed material, photographs, audio cassette tapes, and miscellaneous material. The latter includes a listing of wage increases, a list of the officers, delegates trustees in 1982, and a list of all the members with 25 or more years in the local in 1982. The financial records contain the salaries and dues for a few union members in the early 1940's. The printed materials include Bylaws, 1982, and Working Rules, 1969-1983. The photographs, 1940s-1950s, show a number of the union officers and member of that era. Though most members are unknown, L.P. Pritchett, a union officer, is often identified. The audio cassette tapes contain information and anecdotes about Local 144 from ten of its older members.

Historical Note

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America organized in 1881 as the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. It adopted its present name when the Brotherhood merged with the United Order of American Carpenters and Joiners in 1888.
