History of the Southern States Apprenticeship Conference

In 1948, management and labor representatives from industries across the Southern United States organized the Southern States Apprenticeship Conference (SSAC) to recognize the importance of training of skilled tradesmen to the economy of the South. In April 1948, 370 people, representing ten states (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas), attended the first session of the SSAC, held in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since then, the SSAC has held an annual conference, usually in mid-June, in a different state each year.

By 1953, the SSAC had grown to the point that there was a need for a guiding body to provide leadership in the development of future conferences. The SSAC created the Steering Committee, which was composed of a management and labor representative from each of the now 13 States involved (adding Kentucky, North Carolina, and Oklahoma). Financial arrangements for the Conference came from contributions of management and labor in the participating states.

Today, the Steering Committee, known as the Labor/Management Council, is comprised of two labor and management representatives from each of 15 Southern States (adding Kansas and Missouri since 1969).
