History of the Service Employees International Union

The Service Employees International Union was founded in 1921 in Chicago as the Building Services Employees Union, its first members being janitors, elevator operators, and window washers. In 1968 it renamed itself Service Employees International Union, and in the 1980s it absorbed the International Jewelry Workers Union, the Drug, Hospital, and Health Care Employees Union (Local 1199), and the Health and Human Services Workers.
