History of Sheet Metal Workers International Association, Local 399
Founded on January 25, 1888 in Toledo, Ohio, as the Tin, Sheet Iron and Cornice Workers' International Association, the union affiliated with the American Federation of Labor (AFL) the following year. Having merged with other craft unions, the organization took the name Sheet Metal Workers' International Association (SMWIA) in 1924. The union represents skilled workers in the construction, manufacturing, service, and shipping industries. SMWIA local union 399 is located in Charleston, South Carolina.
