Scope and Content of the Collection

The David Williams Collection, 1918, comprises correspondence between, and minutes of meetings between the Georgia Railway and Power Company and a committee representing some of the company's employees, usually in the person of H. O. Teat. Preston S. Arkwright was president of the Georgia Railway and Electric Company. The collection also includes agreements between the company and Local 732 of the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employees of America, newspaper clippings, memoranda of conversations, bulletins of the American Electrical Railway Association and President Wilson's proclamation creating the National War Labor Board.

History of the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employees of America

The Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employees (later known as the the Amalgamated Transit Union) was founded in 1892 and is the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the United States and Canada, with over 180,000 members in 270 local unions spread across 46 states and nine provinces. The ATU consists of bus, van, subway, and light rail operators, clerks, baggage handlers and maintenance employees in urban transit, over-the-road and school bus industries, as well as emergency medical service personnel, ambulance operators, clerical personnel, and municipal workers.
