Historical Note

The American Federation of Labor (A.F. of L.) was organized as an association of trade unions in 1886. In 1907, its Department of Building Trades was established when the Structural Building Trades Alliance, a independent federation of construction unions founded in 1903, merged into the A.F. of L.
