Scope and Content of the Records
The Records, 1911, 1940-1973, of Atlanta Printing Pressmen and Assistants Union Local 8 consist primarily of correspondence and financial documents. A large part of the correspondence is with International Officers of the union, notably President Thomas Dunwody and International Representative Larry Smith. Prominent Local 8 correspondents are Presidents J.D. Harp, Alton Wood, and William Stephens, and Secretary-Treasurers H.L. Mette and Albert Jones. Major topics are financial affairs, underwriting contracts, jurisdiction and raiding, status promotions of union members, International elections, and training programs. There is also correspondence with various Atlanta printing companies, particularly those belonging to the Union Employing Printers, Printing Industry of Atlanta, concerning negotiating and renewing contracts, manning specifications, and grievances. A strike against Parks Printing Company, 1955, involved Local 8 in extensive legal proceedings.
